Private lessons are whatever you want them to be!

NOT SURE WHERE TO Start?
We suggest you Check out the FaQ below, book an AMA Call, or Book a tour.

    • You want to learn about a technique/skill we don’t currently have a class for

    • Group classes aren’t your thing

    • You are a total beginner and want to dive in before investing in the tools

    • You want a refresher before starting your Bench Membership

    • Your availability is limited and none of our group classes ever work with your schedule

    • You simply need/want a bit more 1 on 1 attention

    • Need help solving a project specific problem.

    • You have a specific project you want to create

    • You have questions about how to grow your business or yourself as an artist

  • We recommend starting with the basics. Our favorite way to do that is by taking the Beginning Metalsmithing for Jewelry class. This curriculum is designed specifically for those who want to learn metalsmithing as it applies to jewelry.

Perfect for beginners—or anyone who wants a refresher—you’ll cover the fundamentals: sawing and piercing, texturing and forming, soldering, finishing, and bezel setting.

If taken as private lessons, we suggest booking a total of 6–9 hours to get the complete education.

This class is also available to take in a group setting here » https://www.alloymetalsmithing.com/skill-based-workshops

  • Mmm… skills are the best kind of treat. Who doesn’t love to level up?

“Actually, I want to throw a small party.”
In that case you are going to want to check out our private workshop options. We can accommodate groups of 1-6 humans. We’ve got some really fun projects to pick from. Check those out here » https://www.alloymetalsmithing.com/private-workshops

  • The cost of a in-person private lesson includes use of the studio and tools. However, it does not include materials. Materials may be purchased during the lesson, but will be limited to what is on hand or in the store.

  • Well that’s a pretty long list….But when you are referring to metalsmithing speciffically we currently do not have the tools or ability to teach metal clay, hollowware, engraving, lapidary work, blacksmithing (steel work), or enameling.

FYI we are working on getting our kiln and enameling tools up and running. They aren’t ready for you yet, but we have high hopes that they will be soon.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

  • ABOUT LOUISE:

I’ve been making jewelry since my 9th birthday party at the Bead Merchant in my hometown, Tulsa, Oklahoma. I moved to Lawrence in 2003 to study music, but transitioned to a degree in metalsmithing. The first time I held a torch was the last time I strung beads. After school, I started an apprenticeship at Jewelry by Design in Prairie Village. I specialize in casting, diamond setting, and all things goldsmithing. My favorite part of teaching at Alloy is experiencing the collaborative energy of a metals studio filled with students and makers at work.

  • ABOUT KELLY:

I love making and creating. Once I found metalsmithing in college, I was hooked. For me it is the perfect pairing of creativity + science. I graduated with a BFA in metalsmithing from KU in 2003 and spent 2 years apprenticing as a bench jeweler at Kizer Cummings Jewelry. The combination of school learning and hands-on training in a jewelry store has given me a solid base of skills and knowledge from which I have built my own career in metalsmithing, as MeritMade. I love hand-fabrication and specialize in mixed metals and hollow forms.

  • ABOUT JULIANNE

Growing up in a home where artistic expression was highly valued, I have been making art since childhood. In February 2020, I decided to turn my creative passion into a career as Golden Hours Jewelry. Although I have been primarily self-taught, I carry the common thread of determination and stubbornness that all good metalsmiths have. I am inspired by nature, history and stories. I love to share my creative enthusiasm with others!

  • Alloy is an incredible resource for anyone wanting to learn metalsmithing!

  • Absolutely love alloy metalsmithing community! No matter how skilled you are, or if you are just starting out and have questions, they make you feel comfortable, and at ease.

  • I knew I'd enjoy it but had no idea how much.
