Exploring Creative Functionality
From fashion statements, to religious sentiments, political declarations to tokens of love and remembrance, jewelry has long held many symbolic meanings. For this challenge, we’re getting a bit more literal, and creating jewelry that physically DOES something — more specifically: RINGS THAT DO THINGS!
Your Challenge:
Create a wearable ring that also incorporates another physical function.
Make rings that don’t just sit there—make them DO something!
Spin it, shift it, open it, rattle it—bring your designs to life with movement, hidden surprises, and playful mechanics. Use hinges, pivots, and linkages, and mix metals with stones, wire, or unexpected found objects.
Get bold, get weird, and make something unforgettable!
PLEASE SUBMIT THE FORM BELOW TO PARTICIPATE!
Once we receive your submission, we will reach out with project details. You can expect a thorough resource guide including ideas for inspiration, shopping resources, and the criteria for the project. Alloy will host one in person group design/work session, and send out weekly check in emails with ideas and inspiration!
Important Dates:
Challenge Release Date: MARCH 23rd. Midpoint Meetup: May 11th
Project Due: June 1st
Final Exhibition: Mid December
SPRING CHALLENGE MEET UP - 5/11/26
Join us at the Alloy Studio to check in and share your Creative Challenge works in progress! This is a time to share your piece with other participants and give or receive feedback on your work so far and mostly cheering each other on!
We will not be getting HANDS on during this session, but we will be getting BRAINS on coming up with ideas for helping us finish those projects. So, bring your work in progress, sketches, books/resources and any other materials you think would be interesting and or helpful to the group or yourself!
There will be at least one instructor on hand to help guide to library resources and answer questions. Drinks provided!
